Air pollution remains one of the leading environmental risks to health in Europe—and its impacts are not equally shared. Vulnerable populations, including children, low-income households, and workers in high-exposure sectors, continue to face disproportionate risks.

This high-level event, organised by the European Respiratory Society, will bring together policymakers, researchers, and civil society to discuss whether the EU’s ambition for zero air pollution is achievable—and what concrete steps are needed to close the gap between ambition and action.

UBDPolicy at the event

The UBDPolicy project will be actively represented, reinforcing its role in advancing evidence-based solutions to environmental health inequalities.

Participants from our team include:

  • Dr. Ulrike Gehring, contributing as speaker and moderator
  • Prof Mark Nieuwenhuijsen (ISGlobal), participating in the panel on housing and urban policy
  • Anne Stauffer, contributing to discussions on environmental health and policy
  • Zorana Andersen, contributing as speaker and moderator

Their involvement highlights UBDPolicy’s commitment to bridging research, policy, and practice to improve respiratory health across Europe.

Why this matters

Despite strong policy commitments, progress on air pollution reduction remains uneven across Europe. This event will focus on:

  • The gap between scientific evidence and policy implementation
  • Persistent inequalities in exposure and health outcomes
  • The role of urban planning and housing policies in shaping healthier environments
