UBDPolicy’s science-to-policy workshop in Warsaw provides a platform for dialogue on urban health
UBDPolicy science-to-policy workshop in Warsaw gathers stakeholders for dialogue on urban health
The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), and the city of Warsaw recently held a science-to-policy consultation workshop, as part of the Urban Burden of Disease Estimation for Policy Making (UBDPolicy) project. This gathering united representatives from Warsaw’s city and regional authorities, along with doctors, researchers, and other stakeholders to explore strategies for reducing the urban burden of disease in Warsaw through environmental, climate, and urban policies.
Enhancing Policy-Making with Science-to-Policy Workshops
Stakeholder engagement is a core element of the UBDPolicy project’s approach to estimating the health and well-being impacts and socio-economic costs and/or benefits of major urban environmental stressors. This workshop in Warsaw was the third of a series of stakeholder engagement exchanges held by the project, following similar workshops in Brussels and Zagreb. These science-to-policy consultation workshops provide a platform for researchers to gather valuable input on essential data for current and future policy-making with the expertise of stakeholders to co-create research scenarios that accurately reflect policy needs.
Warsaw as a Case Study for Health Cost and Benefit Assessments
Warsaw has been selected as one of the case study cities for detailed health cost and benefit assessments, along with Barcelona, Basel, Bradford, Brussels, Copenhagen, Manchester, Munich, Sofia, Utrecht, and Zagreb. At the workshop, the participating stakeholders examined relevant current and prospective environmental, climate and urban policies and strategies that could potentially impact health outcomes. These will serve as the basis for assessing and estimating the health impacts and benefits of various measures, including the forthcoming Warsaw Low Emission Zone, the phase-out of solid fuel heating, and urban greening initiatives.
UBDPolicy is grateful to the organisers and the attendees of this workshop for an enriching discussion.
