Sofia, the capital and most densely populated city of Bulgaria, is home to 1.3 million residents. Its location in a valley limits air circulation, making air pollution a persistent challenge. Additional factors such as heat waves, traffic noise, and a shortage of green spaces further affect the health and well-being of its population.

A new infographic from the EU-funded UBDPolicy research project, in which HEAL is a partner, presents the latest data on the health impacts of air pollution in Sofia.

The infographic highlights pollutant levels in the city compared with the safety thresholds recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). It also estimates the burden of disease linked to these environmental stressors. The full briefing is available in both English and Bulgarian.
